Welcome to Week Three—and the final instalment of The Gathered Sweater pattern!

By now your sweater has really come to life, with all those gathered yarns, colours and textures creating something completely unique to you.

This week we'll return to the sleeves, work the simple rolled cuffs and, if you'd like, add an optional rolled neck. Then it's just a little finishing before your Gathered Sweater is ready to wear.

As you work your sleeves, keep trying your sweater on and remember that our light, lofty yarns may relax and drop a little with steaming.

Let's finish our sweaters!

Week Three Pattern Instructions

Sleeves

Using 6.5 mm / 40 cm circular needles, begin at the centre of the underarm.

Pick up and knit 4 sts, pick up and knit 2 sts at the corner, knit across all 57 (59, 61, 63) held sleeve sts, pick up and knit 2 sts at the opposite corner, then pick up and knit 4 sts to the centre of the underarm.

Place BOR marker.

69 (71, 73, 75) sts

Underarm Decrease

K3, K2tog twice, knit to the last 7 sts, K2tog twice, K3.

65 (67, 69, 71) sts

Continue knitting in the round, changing colours and textures as you go.

Sleeve Shaping

Decrease every 10th round 5 times as follows:

Decrease round: K1, K2tog, knit to last 3 sts, SSK, K1.

A total of 10 sts have been decreased.

55 (57, 59, 61) sts remain.

Continue knitting until the sleeve is approximately 3–4 cm shorter than your desired finished length, allowing for the rolled cuff.

A Note About Your Sleeves

If you would like your two sleeves to have matching colour changes, I recommend working both sleeves at the same time. You will need a second 6.5 mm / 40 cm circular needle to do this.

Try your sweater on as you go to check the sleeve length and fit.

If you have a hand steamer, this is also a good time to give the whole sweater—including the sleeves you've completed so far—a gentle steam.

Because we've used predominantly light, lofty yarns, you may find that the fabric drops a little more than you would normally expect. Steaming and trying your sweater on as you go will help you decide when your sleeves have reached the right length.

Rolled Sleeve Cuff

Change to 6 mm / 40 cm circular needles.

Decrease 5 (7, 8, 8) sts as evenly as possible over the next round, working K2tog at evenly spaced intervals.

50 (50, 51, 53) sts remain.

Using one colour, knit 10 rounds.

Cast off loosely.

Repeat for the second sleeve.

Optional Rolled Neck

If you feel your neckline is a little wider than you would like, you can add a simple rolled neck.

Using 6 mm / 40 cm circular needles (or a smaller needle if preferred), pick up and knit stitches evenly around the neckline.

Using one colour, knit 8–10 rounds.

Cast off loosely.

Finishing

Weave in all ends and gently steam your finished sweater.

Then pop it on and wear it with pride!

Your Gathered Sweater is Finished!

And that's it—you've made your Gathered Sweater!

What started as a collection of individual yarns has become something completely your own. I hope you've enjoyed experimenting with colour and texture, rediscovering yarns you'd almost forgotten about, and perhaps being a little more spontaneous with your knitting along the way.

I've absolutely loved seeing your sweaters grow over the past few weeks. Every time another progress photo pops up, I'm amazed by just how different each Gathered Sweater looks.
