The Gathered Sweater Project โ€“ Week One

Week One โ€“ Let's Cast On Together ๐Ÿงถ

Hello lovely knitter,

Welcome to the very first week of The Gathered Sweater Project.

I'm so excited to knit alongside you!

Over the next three weeks we'll be creating completely unique sweaters using the yarn we've gathered over the years. Some of it might be leftover from favourite projects, some might be that special skein you've been saving, and some might have come from one of our mixed yarn bags.

Whatever you're knitting with, your sweater will be unlike anyone else'sโ€”and that's exactly what makes this project so special.

Before you begin

This isn't a project that needs to be planned from beginning to end.

You don't need to map out every stripe or worry about whether the colours "go together."

I'm simply choosing whichever yarn feels right next. Sometimes it's a fluffy mohair, sometimes a smooth wool, sometimes a bright pop of colour. It's amazing how beautifully they all seem to find their place.

If choosing colours feels a little overwhelming, try selecting three colours that work well together, then another three, and another three. Breaking your yarn into small colour groups can make the whole process feel much more relaxed.

You'll notice I've knitted two rounds in each colour, mainly because it makes it easy to keep track of my raglan increases. But that's just what works for meโ€”you might prefer wider stripes, narrower stripes, or even changing colours mid-round. There are no rules here!

My biggest piece of advice?

Trust your instincts and have fun.

โœจ Sheryl's Note

If you've been saving a special skein for "one day," maybe today is that day.

Yarn is meant to be knitted and enjoyed, and I can't think of a better project to celebrate those treasured leftovers.

This week's pattern

This week we'll be knitting:

  • Casting on
  • The neckline (including optional German Short Rows)
  • Raglan increases

By the end of the following week you'll have a sweater that really starts to look like... well... a sweater!

Coming Up Next... ๐Ÿ’›

I'll be back on Friday 31 July with the first pattern section, which is the cast on, neckline and raglan shaping.

Until then, enjoy gathering your yarn, dreaming about your colour combinations, and getting everything ready for cast on.

I look forward to catching up Friday! ๐Ÿงถ

In the meantime, I'd love to hear what yarn you're planning to cast on withโ€”let me know,ย  scroll down to the comments below! ๐Ÿ’›
